Local Audubon members to present birding along the Grand River program Oct 18

GRAND HAVEN, Mich., Oct. 9, 2012 -- The Grand River corridor provides a wide range of habitats for diverse bird species, and there are many public areas available for birdwatchers.

On Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Loutit District Library (LDL), Audubon members Carl and Judy Manning will talk about some of the best local birding spots and what species might be seen.

Manning’s presentation will be held in LDL’s Program Room A from 7-8:30 p.m.

You may see & hear a lot of ship racing activity from Grand Haven to Holland with a gate (and possible alternative finish) at Port Sheldon on Saturday, September 8, due to the 2012 Anchorage Cup. There will be two concurrent races. The first warning signal is scheduled for 11:30am.

Coast Guard beach and boating informational series continues at LDL August 23

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Loutit District Library will host a public outreach meeting on Thursday, August 23 presented by the Coast Guard to inform, educate, and interact with the public on a variety of beach and boating topics.

The topics will include: beach safety, uninspected passenger vessels, pollution reporting, maritime security requirements, recreational boating safety, and commercial vessel regulations. This free meeting runs from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Library’s Program Room A.

LDL taking reservations for hula hoop fitness programs June 20

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- For those wanting to trim their waistlines or reduce stress, Loutit District Library is offering a hula hoop fitness program for all ages and levels with two sessions on Wednesday, June 20 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Hoop Fit is a new way to strengthen ones core muscles, add definition to arms and tighten legs.

SPRING LAKE, MI-Join Rev. Rich Hamstra at Spring Lake District Library on Tuesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. for a photo essay of Rev. Hamstra’s fly fishing experiences at Yellowstone National Park. Rev. Hamstra participated in a volunteer fly fishing program gathering data on Yellowstone trout during his sabbatical last summer. He’ll be sharing fish tales and fabulous photos of wildlife, flowers, and stunning vistas of Yellowstone Park during this free presentation.

Canoeing & Kayaking Michigan Rivers at SLDL

SPRING LAKE-PBS-featured author and life-long Michigan resident Doc Fletcher will be at Spring Lake District Library on Thursday, May 31 at 6:30 p.m. to talk about the rivers featured in his new book, "Paddling Michigan's Hidden Beauty." The book details 20 memorable canoeing and kayaking trips across both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
 
Attendees will be introduced to little known rivers and enjoy Doc’s photo essay of Michigan’s beautiful rivers and surrounding areas. A drawing will be held and one person will win a gift certificate good for a canoe or kayak day trip. The use of the boats and drop-offs/pick-ups are donated by liveries (rentals) across towns throughout the state. Canoe/kayak livery brochures and state maps will be available.
