Holiday art, craft and gift sale November 24

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-The 43 North Apartment Clubhouse is the place for holiday shopping on Sunday, November 24 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Artists and vendors from all over West Michigan will have great gift-giving ideas, baked goods and more for purchase.

United Methodist Church of the Dunes holds 'Holly Berry Bazaar'

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.—The general public is invited to attend the “Holly Berry Bazaar” at United Methodist Church of the Dunes Friday, November 1  and Saturday, November 2.

This year’s bazaar will feature a cookie walk, bake sale, silent auction and six large booths filled with items handmade by the United Methodist Women’s guild, to help people get in the mood for Christmas and the holidays.  Booths include:

  •   “Holly Berry Christmas”―featuring hand-fashioned ornaments, stockings, pillows, candles    and wall hangings bearing Christmas and holiday trimming.
  • “Potpourri”—featuring children’s clothing, toys, home runners, pillows and hand towels.
  • “Gifts From the Heart”―featuring soup mixes, dip mixes, bird feeders, hand lotions and note pads.
  • “Homespun Gifts”―featuring knit, crocheted and felted items:  scarves, hats, gloves, mittens, baby wearables, flowers to pin

Fabulous Friends Fall Books (and More) Sale!

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Books, baked goods and baubles to delight those interested in the finer things of life will all be available for purchase during the Friends of Spring Lake District Library one-day sale on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The sale will be held at Spring Lake District Library from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A variety of gently-used books, DVDs and CDs for adults and children will be available at rock-bottom prices. Some items can be purchased for a little as a quarter. Bargain hunters can choose from both fiction and non-fiction titles.

In addition to great deals on books, there will be baked goods from the Village Baker available for purchase. Jewelry lovers will want to check out FGDesigns hand-crafted silver jewelry, made with genuine stones and dichroic glass. Artisan designed fused glass vessels and vases will also be for sale. A portion of the FGDesigns sales will be donated to the Friends of SLDL.

Three-county campaign to Take the Stairs kicks off September 3

Organizations in Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties are teaming up this week to encourage people to take the stairs.

Take the Stairs Week runs September 3 through September 6.  The three-day campaign is meant to encourage people to become more physically active while saving energy.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, graphic designs promoting healthy behavior have been shown to motivate stair users; that’s why Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University created images for this campaign.  Free color signs are available at the Heart of West Michigan United Way for businesses and organizations with escalators or elevators.

ArtPrize winner among participants in Fallasburg Fall Festival 2013

The winner of ArtPrize 2010 will be among the more than 95 artists taking part in Fallasburg Fall Festival for the Arts.

LowellArts!  recently released the list of festival vendors, which includes ArtPrize grand prize winner Chris LaPorte. LaPorte’s 28-foot wide pencil drawing “Cavalry, American Officers 1921” earned him $250,000.

 Artists from as far away as Florida will be showcasing their skills during the festival, which runs September 14 and 15.  Visitors can enjoy live music while shopping for new art.

Great Lakes/Great Quilts take over church July 26-27

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.—The hard work of Lighthouse Quilt Guild will be on display this weekend as part of the annual Great Lakes/Great Quilts show.

Visitors to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church can buy quilts and quilt related items, watch quilting demonstrations and check out more than 150 quilts made by the quilt guild.  Eight quilts will be picked for display at the 2014 American Quilting Show in Grand Rapids.

Visitors can also register their quilt in the Michigan Quilt Project by bringing a completed version of this inventory form and a picture of them and their quilt to the show.  The Michigan Quilt Project is dedicated to preserving the state's quilting history at the Michigan State University Museum.

Michigan Historical Commission approves tribute to Meijer family

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Grand Rapids is getting another tribute to the men behind Meijer Stores.

On May 8, the Michigan Historical Commission approved a marker to honor Hendrik and Fred Meijer, who in 1962 became the first grocers to combine two popular retail models—discount department stores and supermarkets—into a single store on 28th Street, called “Thrifty Acres.”  The Meijers then took their model to Holland and Muskegon. 

Meijer now has nearly 200 stores across the Midwest, including Kalamazoo, Walker, Wyoming, Jenison, Rockford, Plainfield Township, Forest Hills, Lowell, Grandville, Kentwood, Grand Haven and Greenville, where Hendrik Meijer opened his very first store in the 1930s.

The new historical marker will be added to more than 1,700 green and gold signs found across the state, that chronicle the people, places and events that make Michigan’s heritage unique and unforgettable.  The historical markers are nominated by spons
