GHAPS receives high marks from auditors

Grand Haven Area Public Schools was given a clean and unqualified audit for the 2009-2010 school year by Rehmann Robson at the November 1 board of education meeting. This is the highest mark an auditor can give a district.

"We have worked diligently to be fiscally responsible during tough economic times," GHAPS Superintendent Keith Konarska says. "Our administrators and unions have worked together to keep efficiencies away from the classroom as much as possible."

Business Services Director Donna Bylenga adds that the two months of operating expenditures reserved in the fund balance means the district does not have to borrow money for cash flow purposes.   "The ability to do this saves the district thousands of dollars," Bylenga adds.

GHAPS, Local 517M reach one-year contract extension

Grand Haven Area Public Schools and the Service Employees International Union 517M reached a deal that will extend the current contract for one year and includes insurance concessions equaling more than $88,000.

Local 517M members, which includes transportation, custodians and food service employees, will move to a plan that increases prescription co-pays to a $10/$20 card through the West Michigan Health Insurance Pool, according to GHAPS Superintendent Keith Konarska.

"We are very appreciative of the cooperation of the union in creating savings during these challenging economic times," Konarska said.

The agreement will extend the current contract through the 2011-12 school year and gives these employees a 1.5-percent salary increase.
