GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - In an effort to keep residents of the City of Grand Haven more informed about what's going on at city hall, students at Grand Haven Public Schools have teamed up with the city to create a collection of city digest videos full of useful information.

Central High School holds blood drive

Central High School, 106 S. Sixth Street in Grand Haven, will hold a community blood drive on Friday, February 25, from 8 a.m.- Noon through Michigan Blood. Newly approved legislation has made it acceptable for those 16 and older to donate with parental permission.   Please contact Colleen Warner at 616.850.6851 for more information.

Winter Wonderjam coming to Grand Haven High School

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Thermoplyea, Buster Blues Band, Formerly Hip and The Gimmes are the names of just a few artists scheduled to preform at Grand Haven High School on Saturday, February 19 for Winter Wonderjam 2011. Several others including local acts, solo artists and youth bands will be performing throughout the day from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm in both the Performing Arts Center and the auxiliary gymnasium.

Other festivities include an art contest, food court and door prizes including a moped, long board, guitars, bikes, chairs and more.  

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $5 for students and children 10 and under are free.

GHHS starts after-school program for ESL students

Grand Haven High School's new CLUB ESL, is an after-school program addressing the increasing academic demands on Grand Haven High School English as a second language (ESL) students. Current and former ESL students, as well as migrant and refugee students grades 9-12, are eligible and encouraged to attend.   "We will be assisting students with homework, projects, papers and research to ensure oru district's vision of success for all," GHAPS ESL teacher Ben Lawrence says. "We will also be socializing, dancing and listening to music to help build teamwork and camaraderie."   CLUB ESL meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 - 4:15 p.m.   "We are always looking for volunteers to help us," Lawrence adds. Grand Haven Area Public Schools sells 2011 refunding bonds

Grand Haven Area Public Schools will save taxpayers over $72,000 and make lower debt payments over the next six years after the successful sale of its 2011 Refunding Bonds.

"Our district was able to sell these bonds because we have earned a 'AA-' rating from Standards and Poors" GHAPS Superintendent Keith Konarska says. "We have been recognized for our strong financial reserves, good management policies, and low overall debt levels which makes purchasing these bonds attractive to many buyers."

In preparing to sell the 2011 Refunding Bonds, GHAPS worked with their financial advisor, Stauder, Barch & Associates.

"Grand Haven Area Public Schools Bonds were well received by the bond market," Brenda Voutyras, Senior Vice President and Managing Director with Stifel Nicolaus says.

2011 Winter Wonderjam

Grand Haven Area Public Schools, Spread the Music Foundation Inc., and the Grand Haven Area Arts Council are coming together to celebrate music with the community and raise money for kids!

"This is a great opportunity to enjoy area musicians, young and old, in the comfort of the beautiful facilities at Grand Haven High School's Performing Arts Center and auxiliary gymnasium," Spread the Music Foundation Director Dave Palmer says. "This all-day event will feature a variety of musical acts including six adult bands, six youth bands and five special feature artists. Enjoy rock, steel drums, acoustic, and much more during the West Michigan wintertime!"

Included with this day of music and fun, there will be an opportunity for patrons eat from local restaurants in our Wonderjam Food Court, as well as participate as a judge and cast your vote for the Recycled Instruments Art Show.
