Loutit District Library to offer dog ownership and bite prevention seminar

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Thinking about or already adopted a dog for your child or children?

If so, then come to the Loutit District Library on Feb. 13 as Must Love Dogs Boutique of Grand Haven hosts a free mini-seminar by the Muskegon Lakeshore Obedience Training Club on responsible dog ownership and bite prevention.

MLOTC members will be on hand with child-friendly dogs to show your child or children best pet practices and how to prevent and handle dog bite situations. To top off the seminar, there will be Freestyle Dance demonstrations. Freestyle Dance is a fun and modern dog sport, mixing obedience training, tricks, and dance allowing for creative interaction between dogs and their owners.

Ottawa County Way Essay Challenge open two resident writers

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich.—Why is Ottawa County like no other place to live?

Writers of all ages are invited to answer that question during the Ottawa County Way Essay Challenge.  Participants can share their views about living, working and playing in West Michigan through the competition. 

The winner will receive $150.  Second place will get $100, and third place will take home $50.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Blues and reggae guitar legend Donald Kinsey has enthralled audiences and inspired fans with his electrifying guitar work for more than five decades.

Kinsey will come to Grand Haven on Feb. 9 to perform for Loutit District Library’s Sunday Afternoon Concert Series.

As the guitarist for blues great Albert King, and with world-inspiring performances as the guitarist for reggae sensations Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, Kinsey's contribution to the genres of blues and reggae leaves a positive imprint in the annals of music history.

Concert goers will experience Kinsey's mesmerizing vocals and guitar playing, positive energy, and the sonic influences that shaped his guitar style. Kinsey calls this performance, “A celebration for all music fans.”

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--There’s a new opportunity to get creative after school at the Spring Lake District Library!

Children in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to join in the After School Art Club on the second Wednesday of the month to create a project inspired by a children’s book. On Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. children can drop in to create animal art from paper hearts, based on the book "My Heart Is Like a Zoo" by Michael Hall. Materials will be provided. Children seven years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Ferrysburg to consider selling bonds to create more trails

FERRYSBURG, Mich.—The City of Ferrysburg will consider selling bonds to support the building a new set of trails throughout the city.

The bond proposal will be presented during the city council’s meeting Monday, Feb. 3.   The proposal is still in its early stages; the council will consider scheduling a work session regarding the issue.

The trails would be non-motorized, meaning no vehicles would be allowed.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Do you know when your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms are due?

 Students and parents are invited to attend a free presentation about how to successfully complete FAFSA forms on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7:00 p.m. at Spring Lake District Library. Staff from the financial aid office at Grand Valley State University will share information about filing deadlines, which documents are needed to complete FAFSA forms, types of financial aid that are available, how to determine eligibility for need based aid, and how to avoid scams. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions.
