Today will mark the beginning of the 88th annual Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival. The 10-day celebration is loaded with family friendly activities, events, and attractions, most of which are free.

Some of the festival's highlights include the Cruise-In Car Show, downtown carnival, Grand Parade, Kids Day, and, of course, the firework show on the night of August 4. There will also be live music and performances almost every day on the Lake Trust Credit Union Waterfront Stage. Tickets for each of the shows can be purchased at the Coast Guard Festival Office.

Both the Auxiliary and National Coast Guard Memorial services will be held on August 3, along with the Walk of Coast Guard History Tour. Visit www.coastguardfest.org for more information on the week's festivities.

Organizers to form Friends of Grand Haven State Park

Organizers to form Friends of Grand Haven State Park

The organizers of the soon to be formed Friends of Grand Haven State Park will be holding a meeting on July 30, 2012 at 6 PM. The meeting will be held at the shelter end of the Day Use Pavilion of Grand Haven State Park and will be open to anyone interested in being involved with this new group.

A friend’s group can work along side the park to promote the park, influence improvements, and collect funds for improvements. We at GHSP are glad that a group of people are willing to be our friends and support the many different types of groups who use this park for the mutual enjoyment of all. Many people love this park and are willing to support it. This will be one way to be involved in making this park even better.

Finney’s presentation, held in LDL’s Program Room A, will follow the story of the Grand River and its use by Native Americans and the European White settlers who followed. His focus is on the changing influence people have with the ecology of the river and the cultural ideals and practices of the many groups who have lived here over time.

He goes on to explain why people have been a significant part of the Grand River's ecology since the last glaciers retreated.
