Christmas concert at St. Mary's School slated for December 17

SPRING LAKE, Mich.―St. Mary’s School will host an all-grade Christmas concert on Tuesday, December 17 at 7 p.m.

The general public is invited to attend the vocal and instrumental performance, which will take place at the school, located at 421 East Exchange St. in Spring Lake.  Several Christmas favorites are in the repertoire. No admission will be charged to attend the event. Anyone interested in obtaining further information should contact Saint Mary’s Parish School at (616) 842-1282. 

Saint Mary’s Parish School in its current location was opened in 1954 with 150 students enrolled in grades three through eight. In 1955, grades one and two were added. Enrollment increased every year up to 1965-66 when 330 students were enrolled. Since the mid-1970s, enrollment has remained steady at around 200 students.  In April 2006, a 22,000 square foot Parish Center was completed and dedicated by Bishop Walter Hurley during a special ribbon cutting ceremony.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Boys and girls are invited to Spring Lake District Library for special stories and Santa Storytime during the week of December 15. 

Children will have the opportunity to talk with Santa and discuss their holiday wishes. Parents are welcome to bring cameras to take photos with Santa. The Santa Storytime schedule is as follows:

  • Bedtime Storytime Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 p.m. - Children of all ages and their families are invited to attend and enjoy a holiday-themed story before meeting with Santa.  Bring the whole family, even a stuffed animal friend!  Pajama-clad participants are welcome.
  • Preschool Storytime Thursday, Dec. 19 and Friday, Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. - Designed with children ages 3 to 5 years old in mind, preschoolers will enjoy a story chosen just for them before talking with Santa.

St. Mary's to host Scholastic Book Fair December 12-19

SPRING LAKE, Mich.―St. Mary’s School will host a Scholastic Book Fair at St. Mary’s Church from Thursday, December 12 to Thursday, December 19.

The church is located at 406 East Savidge St. in Spring Lake. The general public is invited to attend. Board books for early readers, adventure, biography, teen and young adult books will be available.

Scholastic Book Fair Hours:

  • December 12, 13, 16, 17, 18 and 19 --10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • December 14 – 5:30-6:30 p.m. 
  • December 15 – 12 to 1 p.m.

Sunday Afternoon Concert Series: The Platinum Quartet

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.  -- The Platinum Quartet, a group of saxophone students from the music department at Grand Valley State University, will perform at Loutit District Library (LDL) on December 8, as part of the library's Sunday Afternoon Concert Series.

The Platinum Quartet is a saxophone quartet comprised Andrea Voulgaris on soprano sax, Michael Mitrovitch on alto sax, Cameron Miller on tenor sax and Matthew Kobberstad on baritone sax. Since forming, the group has had an active schedule of performing works at a variety of venues on and off GVSU's campus.

Spring Lake District Library welcomes Santa's Workshop

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Children of all ages are invited to get into the holiday spirit at Santa's Workshop on Saturday, December 7 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Spring Lake District Library.

Several craft stations will be set up for children to make gifts for family and friends. Special guest Santa Claus will also make an appearance and will be available to visit with participants.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Take a break from the hectic holiday season and refresh your mind and spirit with the gentle music of harpist Mary Wagner at the Spring Lake District Library.

Wagner will perform on Sunday, December 1, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free musical presentation.

Wagner is a graduate of University of Michigan with a degree in harp and piano performance and music education.  A former harpist for the West Shore Symphony, Wagner is the art and music instructor at New Era Christian School and Oceana Christian School.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--The Grand Rapids Ballet Junior Company is taking "The Nutcracker" to the Spring Lake District Library.

A troupe of ballet students will perform selections from the production Monday, December 2 at 7 p.m. The dancing, costumes and music of this classic holiday show are sure to capture the imagination of children of all ages.  Children age seven and younger who attend the performance must be accompanied by an adult.  Attendance is limited to 70 people.
