 Brown bag lunch program kicks off Loutit District Library centennial celebration

GRAND HAVEN, Mich -- Loutit District Library begins its yearlong series of centennial programs on Thursday, Jan. 9 with a noon-hour event that traces the history of our community's love of reading.

Librarian Mary Mihovich will relate the stories of those dedicated to ensuring that books would be available for loan to all who share that passion. Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch.

Learn how to generate business through social media Jan. 10

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.— Learn how to turn Facebook “likes” into business leads during a social media workshop coordinated by the by the Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg chambers of commerce.

People who register for the Jan. 10 event will hear from a panel of local business and nonprofit organization leaders about how to engage their audience on social media.  Marie Kar from Redframe Creative will lead an in-depth question and answer session following the presentations.

The social media workshop will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in program room A at Loutit District Library. Registration begins at 11:15 a.m.  The cost is $15 for chamber members and $20 for non-members.  Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.   To register, contact Courtney Geurink at (616) 842-4910.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.— Michigan House Republican Amanda Price is inviting community members to share their concerns with her as she holds local office hours at the Spring Lake District Library.

Price will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 3 at the library, located at 123 E. Exchange St.  All area residents are welcome to stop buy during that time; appointments are not necessary.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Amateur photographers are invited to sharpen their skills during a free photography class at Spring Lake District Library on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Professional photographer Jack Adams of Adams Studio will share his expertise about digital SLR cameras. The class is designed for the beginning to intermediate level photographer. Adams will explain how digital cameras work and how to use the various buttons, dials, and lenses to achieve consistent results.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras (and instruction manuals if possible) to class.

Loutit District Library announces New Year’s holiday hours

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Loutit District Library will close Tuesday, Dec. 31 and Wednesday, Jan. 1 in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

The library will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 9:00 a.m.

Although the library is closed, its website, www.loutitlibrary.org, is available 24 hours-a-day throughout the holiday period. Patrons can check on the availability of books and other resources at any of the 55 libraries in the Lakeland Library Cooperative online. They can renew materials, place holds and review the status of their library accounts. In addition, the website provides online databases, downloadable audio-books and e-books, a calendar of upcoming library events and links to other resources to help patrons find the information they need.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Looking for something fun to do during the upcoming holiday break?

Spring Lake District Library is hosting several fun activities for children. The schedule is as follows:                                                                    

United Methodist Church of the Dunes to Present Christmas Eve Candlelight Services

DEC. 17, 2013, GRAND HAVEN, MICH.—United Methodist Church of the Dunes (UMCD), at 717 Sheldon Road in Grand Haven, will present its annual Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship Services on Dec. 24 at 7 and 11 p.m. The general public is invited to attend free of charge. The theme for both services will be “A Festival of Lessons and Carols” by Hal H. Hopson. Featured will be readings and scriptural lessons of faith, along with the following musical numbers: • O Come All Ye Faithful • The God of Abr’am Praise • Lo, How a Rose • There is no Rose • Good Christian Friends, Rejoice • Angels We Have Heard on High • Joy to the World The 7 p.m. event is a “Family Service.” The UMCD Youth and Children’s Choirs, plus chimers and bell ringers will be featured. The 11 p.m. event will feature the UMCD Bells of Glory and Chancel Choirs. “The 11 p.m. candlelight service is more of a contemplative and reflective service,” said Jean Schuitman, director of music and organist at UMCD.
