My Town Spring Lake: Township first in the state to earn honor

SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Spring Lake Township is celebrating an honor no other Michigan municipality has ever received.

Spring Lake Township recently became the first township in the state to earn the Township of Excellence title.  Townships must meet a series of demanding, high-level criteria by the Michigan Townships Association in order to achieve the designation.  Spring Lake Township board members and staff accepted the award during the MTA’s Educational Conference & Expo Jan. 29.

“Spring Lake Township is made up of elected officials and staff members who sincerely want to provide the best service possible for our residents,” township Supervisor John Nash said. “When MTA established the Township of Excellence standards, it was a natural for us to see how we measured up to this very complete and tough standard.”

A Township of Excellence is defined as a strong, vibrant community governed by a township board that adheres to best practices to deliver quality programs and services to accomplish community-driven goals.

“Many local governments embrace some or many of these hallmarks of excellence, and it is laudable that a local government succeeds on so many levels and in respect to such a broad scope of governance, management and operations,” MTA Executive Director Larry Merrill said. “Striving and maintaining the level of excellence achieved by Spring Lake Township reaps dividends to its taxpayers.”

Spring Lake Township will keep its Township of Excellence designation through 2016.
