Harbor Humane Society Hosts 2014 Tails on Trails Dog Walk

West Olive, Mich.—The Harbor Humane Society is gearing up for its annual Tails on Trails Dog Walk, the animal shelter’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The event, which is being held at a new location at the Outdoor Discovery Center (4214 56th Street; Holland, MI  49423), will take place on August 23, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The event centers around a designated route where families are encouraged to walk their dog, along with other activities that the whole family and dogs can enjoy. Food and promotional venders will also be on site.  There will be a special appearance from Zeke the Wonder Dog, whose popularity comes from performing during the halftime of many Michigan State University football games.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- C2C Gallery, Julie Sanford Designs, and the Creative Fringe hosted the 3rd Annual GHHS Ceramic and Jewelry Show on Friday, May 2.

Many local families came in to see the students’ work.  More than 20 ceramic forms and five jewelry creations were selected for this exhibit.  The show will remain on display through the third week in May. 

Cyndi Casemier, owner of C2C Gallery, and Sheri Greene, GHHS Ceramics Instructor select the student artwork.  They spend several hours looking at the work, discussing it, and looking some more.  It is always a difficult selection.

Loutit District Library to offer dog ownership and bite prevention seminar

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Thinking about or already adopted a dog for your child or children?

If so, then come to the Loutit District Library on Feb. 13 as Must Love Dogs Boutique of Grand Haven hosts a free mini-seminar by the Muskegon Lakeshore Obedience Training Club on responsible dog ownership and bite prevention.

MLOTC members will be on hand with child-friendly dogs to show your child or children best pet practices and how to prevent and handle dog bite situations. To top off the seminar, there will be Freestyle Dance demonstrations. Freestyle Dance is a fun and modern dog sport, mixing obedience training, tricks, and dance allowing for creative interaction between dogs and their owners.

(WZZM) -- Humans bundle up in jackets and scarves when it's cold outside, so it's important to protect your four legged friends as well.

Tonya Christiansen from Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa in Grand Haven shared some tips on how to protect your pets not only from the cold, but from the salt on winter roads as well.

All pets invited to blessing at St. Mary's Parish School

SPRING LAKE, Mich. – Mike Devitt, principal with Saint Mary’s Parish School in Spring Lake, is inviting community members to bring their pets of all shapes and sizes to the upcoming “Blessing of the Pets” on the feast day of St. Francis (patron of animals) Friday, October 4.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lot green space at St. Mary’s School, located at 421 East Exchange St. in Spring Lake. Father Dan DePew, pastor of Saint Mary’s Church, will preside over the gathering. The event is free and open to the general public.

Dog census moves to Grand Haven and Zeeland townships

HOLLAND, Mich.—Ottawa County’s dog census is now heading to Grand Haven and Zeeland townships.        

So far, county workers and interns have gone door to door in Holland, Georgetown, Allendale and Park townships, checking for licensed dogs.  Households with unlicensed dogs must get their dog licensed or pay a ticket. As part of licensing, dogs must have their updated shots.  Licenses are $10 to $70 per pet and available for purchase online, by mail or at the following locations:

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Grab a favorite book and read with a friendly dog!

Riley, a certified therapy dog, and his owner Sue Waldron will be at the Spring Lake District Library on Wednesday, July 10, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to meet Riley and spend some time reading to him.

This is a great opportunity for children to practice their reading skills throughout the summer months with a non-judgmental furry friend. This program will take place in the Youth Services Department. Children ages seven and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
