My Town: Run to support crime victims during Katty Shack 5K

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- Registration is now open for the Katty Shack 5K Memorial Run.

The event, which is in honor of Katherine Brown, will take place April 26 in Grand Haven.  Proceeds from the race will go to the Crime Victim Foundation of Michigan.  The event has generated more than $50,000 for the foundation in years past.

My Town: Bestselling author to speak at St. Patrick-St. Anthony lenten mission

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- In the lenten season leading up to Easter, Fr. Albert Haase, OFM, world-renowned traveler, bestselling author, teacher and priest will journey to Grand Haven and serve as guest preacher at all weekend masses.  He will also lead attendees in a special lenten mission from March 8 through March 10 at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish.

Masses will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 8 at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Three special lenten mission programs will be held Sunday through Tuesday, March 8, 9 and 10, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish Church.  The parish is located at 920 Fulton Ave. in Grand Haven.  The general public is welcome to attend all free programs.

Entitled “Signed and Sealed With the Cross,” St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish’s lenten mission series will help attendees explore the identity of God, as proclaimed in the ancient gesture of being signed with a cross.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.A group of real estate professionals have come together to create a service that is giving back to those who serve the public in the Grand Rapids area.

"U Deserve" has brought together several professionals who are dedicated to lowering costs associated with buying, selling or refinancing a home for active military members, veterans, firefighters, police officers, EMS providers, health care professionals and educators.

“Growing up with a father who served in the National Guard and as a police officer, I was able to see first-hand how much public service individuals give back to their communities,” said Kevin Wildman, founder of U Deserve.  “U Deserve is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those individuals.”

Aspect Foundation is a nonprofit organization that can show families how to have a cultural adventure of a lifetime.

Host families, married adults and single adults are encouraged to host an international high school student for a semester or an academic year.

Aspect Foundation works with students of nearly 30 different countries that all share the same vision-- to experience life the American way. The students are ages 15-18 years and chosen by their English proficiency, maturity and academic excellence with a variety of different abilities and interests.  They arrive in August.

The Michigan Restaurant Association (MRA) is pleased to announce that Steve Loftis of Grand Haven has received the MRA Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor given by the Association. He was bestowed the honor at the MRA's annual Chairman's Dinner, held this year in Kalamazoo on January 25, 2015.

 

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have provided exceptional and continuing leadership, vision, and commitment to Michigan’s foodservice industry. Previous Distinguished Service Award winners select a new winner each year from submitted nominations.

 

Loftis is owner of Harbor Restaurants, which owns and operates Snug Harbor, Dee-Lite Bar & Grill, Theatre Bar, Jelly’s, and the Grand Seafood & Oyster Bar – all located in Grand Haven. He also owns Creative Advantage, a hospitality training and consulting firm.
