Saint Mary’s fifth grade class leads coat drive

Saint Mary’s School fifth grade class led by teacher Jean Jannenga is hosting a drive for new or gently used coats, mittens, gloves, hats and even blankets now until November 5.  All items collected by the students will be donated to the Muskegon Rescue Michigan. 

If you would like to make a donation you may do so at Saint Mary’s School on the corner of Prospect and Exchange Street (behind St. Mary’s Parish).

October 2010 Weather Stats for Muskegon, Michigan

Temperatures in October averaged 53.0°F, 3.3°F above average and 4.4°F warmer than last year (48.6°F). Eighteen days were warmer than usual, nine days were cooler and four were average. The highest temperature occurred on October 9 with 77°F while the lowest temperature occurred on October 31 with 29°F.

Precipitation was below average last month with 2.13", 0.67" less than usual, and 3.87" less than last year (6.00"). There were eleven days with measurable precipitation, which is average (11).

No snow fell during the month, which is 0.6" below average and the same as last year (0.0").

There were seventeen clear days last month - ten days more than average (7), eleven partly cloudy days - three more than usual (8), and three cloudy days - twelve fewer than average (15).

 

Keller Ford Kia MVP - Week 9 - Adam Poel, Grand Haven

(WZZM) - Grand Haven quarterback Adam Poel is the week nine winner of the Keller Ford Kia MVP award.

Poel threw for 299 yards and four touchdowns in the Buccaneers win over Muskegon. The win gave Grand Haven a share of the O-K Red title.

Congratulations to Adam Poel, the winner of the Keller Ford Kia MVP award for week nine.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central wins high scoring game against Spring Lake

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A pair of 7-2 teams met in Division Four Friday as the Spring Lake Lakers visited the Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars.

The Cougars were up by 1 in the 3rd when Miles Morrissey gave the ball to Bronson Hill.  Hill took it in for 6 extending the team's lead.

Later in the 3rd quarter Bronson Hill got the ball again, turned up the juice and took the ball 70 yards for a touchdown.  Cougars lead 38-20.

In the 4th quarter Kevin Vicari dove into the endzone for another touchdown.

Catholic Central took this game 45-34.  They will meet the winner of Unity Christian and Zeeland West.

West Ottawa squeaks out win over Grand Haven in the Game of the Week

GRAND HAVEN (WZZM) -- O-K Red foes clashed again in the first round of the playoffs as the West Ottawa Panthers visited the Grand Haven Buccaneers.

Grand Haven would get on the board first thanks to a Dalton Stenberg one yard touchdown rush. That would make it 7-0 Bucs.

The first play of the second quarter the Panthers Zac Boerma would give the Panthers the 14-7 lead.

Grand Haven would answer before the half. On fourth and one Adam Poel would go up the gut untouched to even the score at 14.

The Bucs would take a 21-20 lead in the fourth after a Stenberg short touchdown run. The Panthers would have time on the clock and the ball on their side, though. Brian Holmes would attempt his third field goal of the night, and it'd be the game winner. 23-21 West Ottawa comes away the winner.

Scagel Knife Expert Speaks at Spring Lake District Library

SPRING LAKE -- Spring Lake District Library will be hosting a free presentation about William Wales Scagel, a legendary bladesmith known for his custom knives. Scagel expert Dr. James Lucie will talk about the man, his life, and his knives on Tuesday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Lucie is a bladesmith in his own right who specializes in creating knives in the Scagel style and is a collector of Scagel knives and memorabilia. 

Dr. Lucie will also have copies of his recently published book about Scagel entitled Scagel Handmade available for purchase and signing.

Veterans Day Presentation at Spring Lake District Library

SPRING LAKE -- Spring Lake District Library is inviting veterans and their families to a special Veterans Day presentation on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 10 a.m.  Guest speaker Dr. James Smither, a history professor at Grand Valley State University, will compare and contrast the experiences of those who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Those who attend the presentation can also learn more about the Veterans History Project, a nation-wide endeavor to record the individual stories of veterans and the civilians who supported them for posterity. Volunteers are working across the country to gather these recollections to enrich our nation’s understanding of those who have served throughout the years.
