GHAPS - Changes to School Board Member Elections

From: http://www.ghaps.org

This past November, Michigan election law was amended to require that all school board elections be held in November of even years beginning in 2012. In order to implement the November even-year election cycle, current board members' terms of office have been extended by either 6 or 18 months, depending upon the year of their election.

Board members are currently elected to serve fouryear terms. In an effort to avoid a potential turnover of a majority of board members (4) during a given year, the GHAPS school board passed a resolution of intent to establish six-year board member terms commencing with the 2012 November General Election. The move to a six-year rotation provides for stability of the board and a stable replacement schedule of board members.

The annual school election for Grand Haven Area Public Schools will be held on November 6, 2012. District voters will be asked to elect two board of education members to each serve six-year terms. Dave Davis and Christine Baker currently hold the seats up for election.

Persons wishing to file a petition for an open seat on the board must be a registered voter within the school district, at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, resident of Michigan for at least 30 days and a resident of the school district on or before the 30th day prior to the election. Nominating petition sheets are available from the Office of the County Clerk. Petitions are due to the Ottawa County Clerk's Office no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2012. Candidates can avoid filing nominating petitions by paying a nonrefundable filing fee of $100 to the Ottawa County Clerk's Office.
