Harbor Transit Expansion Into GH Township Helps Generate 30% Increase In Ridership

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Harbor Transit announces a dramatic increase in its demand for service since bus transportation was expanded into Grand Haven Township earlier this year. Demand service became available on January 3 to the entire township following a successful millage vote. In order to better accommodate this expansion, four new buses were added to the fleet and 10 new drivers hired to handle the expected increase in ridership. During the first two weeks of February, Harbor Transit averaged 100 pickups per day in the township.

"The entire system transported 7,360 passengers in that two week period which translates into a 30% increase over the same period of a year ago," stated Tom Manderscheid, Transportation Director. "We've know for some time that the need existed in the township for bus service to the schools, for shopping, and to help get people to and from work and we are pleased to be able to address those needs."

Harbor Transit provides on-demand curb to curb service seven days a week throughout a service area that includes Ferrysburg, Spring Lake Village, the City of Grand Haven, and now Grand Haven Charter Township. During peak hours of operation there are a total of sixteen buses on the road which covers a service area of 39 square miles. Later this year, Harbor Transit will add two mini-vans to its fleet that will primarily serve the portion of the township South of Lincoln Street.

Other improvements are also underway which include an automated dispatching system that will be installed yet this year as well as a $719,000 renovation to the operations and maintenance facility located on North Ferry in the City of Grand Haven.

"This renovation project represents the first major rehab of the building since it was constructed back in 1983 and when completed will greatly enhance our overall efficiency and operational capability," Manderscheid said.

Harbor Transit operates Monday through Friday from 6 am to 6 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday by appointment from 8 am to 1 pm. For on demand service simply call 842-3200 and Harbor Transit will be there to pick you up.
