Kiteboarder challeges Lake Michigan waves and wind

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- Gale force winds and 13-foot waves are making it dangerous along the lakeshore in Grand Haven.

And that's just how kite boarder Steve Novak says he likes it.

"Absolutely," he says. "I'm like a kid on Christmas morning."

Novak says there are only a few days during the year when the wind is blowing and the waves are pounding. He says he likes to get his kiteboard and take advantage of the opportunity.

"You need wind and waves for kiteboarding," he explains. "The higher the winds the better."

Photographer David Keller says he is often with Novak when he is out challenging nature with his kiteboard. Keller records video to post on YouTube.

"It's pretty bad out there," he says pointing to the churning waves on Lake Michigan. "But I've seen him out there in bigger waves and I'm there rooting him on with my camera. It's fun to watch him."

Novak says he has the proper equipment to keep him warm and safe out on the lake. He says the experience is indescribable.

"It's unreal," he laughs. "It gets your adrenaline going. It was a perfect day out."
