Canadian donation helps preserve Grand Haven 'coal tipple'

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- Efforts to restore a landmark building in Grand Haven are going better than expected thanks to fundraising and a surprise donation from Canada.

Our partners at the Grand Haven Tribune say the Grand Haven Community Foundation raised $100,000 in just 90 days to preserve the city's "coal tipple."

That includes a $15,000 gift from the Canadian National Railway System.

The tipple was built in 1925 to load coal into train cars.

The donations are more than the cost to fix the tipple, so about $10,000 in leftover funds will go into the community foundation's general fund.
