Girl blames herself for pit bull bite
News

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- Grand Haven teenager Brittania Bird has wounds on her lips, cuts on her nose and a torn eye lid after a pit bull she was petting lunged and nipped her in the face.

"
My eye was my biggest concern,
"
she recalls.
"
Everything started going grey and blurry. I don
'
t want to go blind.
"

But Brittania, 14, and her father say they aren
'
t blaming the dog.

She says she saw the dog at the Grand Haven splash pad Sunday afternoon and got permission from the owner to give it some pets.

The girl thinks she may have startled the pit bull when she rose and stood over him.

She is calling the injuries to her face an accident and she doesn
'
t think the pet should be put down.

"I hope that doesn't happen because I don't want to take a dog away from its family," she explains. "It was just an accident. Accidents happen. I think it was my fault for scaring the dog."

A decision on the dog's future won
'
t come until after it completes 10 days in quarantine to make sure it doesn
'
t have rabies.

Brittania and her family are not taking any legal action or asking police to press charges.
