The Affordable Care Act and your bottom line

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.—How will the Affordable Care Act affect your bottom line?

The Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce hopes to answer that question with the help of health care, accounting and legal experts this Thursday, December 5.   The Chamber will present “The Affordable Care Act & Your Business” from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Trillium Event Center.   Admission is $25 for chamber members and $35 for non-members; breakfast and materials are included.

Lansing, MI—October 25—Think you’re not a good candidate for blood donation? Think again. Sometimes, people with high blood pressure and diabetes suspect they are not eligible to give blood. Many cancer survivors also believe they will be deferred because of their previous illness.

 

“But that’s not always the case,” said Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross.

OTTAWA COUNTY – Ottawa County Department of Public Health, Ottawa Youth Sexual Health Coalition (OYSHC) and several other community agencies will be hosting the 8th annual Teen Pregnancy/Parenting Conference on October 23rd at Christ Memorial Church (595 Graafschap Rd. Holland). This event is FREE and open to all pregnant and parenting teens in Ottawa County. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Barber, from the Grand Haven area. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants, plus free diapers. The conference will also have a variety of breakout sessions in the afternoon, including a very special session for the Dads that attend.

SPRING LAKE, Mich.--Will doing a daily crossword puzzle help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia?

Find out at Spring Lake District Library on Tuesday October 22, at 7 p.m. Guest speaker Joy Spahn, regional director of the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Michigan Chapter, will present information about how to support brain health. Spahn will discuss how to maximize and improve current memory skills, as well as how to reduce risk factors for dementia.

Toxins in baby shampoos. Lead in lipsticks. According to an EPA study, up to 700 chemicals can be found in the average adult in the United States. These chemicals range from pesticides, flame retardants, to plasticizers. Even PCB’s that were banned in the 1970’s are showing up in newborn babies according to a study from the American Red Cross. 

“A Conversation with Women” is an event that will take place at the Tri-Cities Family YMCA on Saturday, October 19.  It investigates the role of women in preventing cancer by looking not only at our food choices, but also at the chemicals that are in our personal care, and household products.  The event is lead by Patty Oltean, who holds a degree in Environmental Communications.

Loutit District Library to show documentary on eating local food October 9

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- The Loutit District Library and Local First are teaming up to present a free screening of the movie "Ingredients" on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 5-7 p.m. in the library’s program room A.

The goal of the movie is to educate West Michigan on the importance of buying local foods, supporting local farms and recognizing restaurants that also do so. The documentary will focus on Portland, OR, but has direct ties to Michigan's agriculture systems. The film's run time is 67 minutes.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Meijer) – Meijer, the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based supercenter chain, announced today that it is partnering with Priority Health, Michigan's leading health plan, to raise awareness and help customers obtain information regarding their options as open enrollment for health insurance begins under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). 

The Michigan-based entities have unveiled a Health Reform and You! website at http://www.meijer.com/aca and are also providing informational brochures for customers at 203 Meijer pharmacy locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.
