NOCCOA to hold seminar at Loutit District Library September 25

GRAND HAVEN, MI -- North Ottawa County Council on Aging (NOCCOA) will present a seminar on Tuesday, September 25 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Loutit District Library that will provide overviews of Social Security Benefits, Veteran’s Benefits, Medicare Parts A, B and D, Medigap Insurance, Medicare Advantage, and Low Income Subsidy (LIS).

This seminar will benefit anyone turning 65 and soon retiring; filing for Social Security for the first time; confused by the Medicare insurance options; or a veteran wondering about what is available in additional services.

SPRING LAKE, MI--Preserving food at home can be a great way to eat more healthfully using locally grown foods. Spring Lake District Library will be hosting a free presentation on how to preserve garden fresh foods on Thursday, July 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Monica Smith who is a Registered Dietician and a MSU Extension Educator for Kent, Allegan, and Ottawa counties. Smith will talk about safe canning techniques including when to use pressure canning versus hot water bath canning. Smith will discuss pros and cons of canning, what type of equipment is needed, and which foods can well.

The American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region is pleased to announce that employees represented by Teamsters Local 580 and OPEIU Local 459 returned to work on June 21 and have been busy preparing to get the Region running at full capacity again.

Beginning July 6, the Great Lakes Region will hold regularly-scheduled blood drives, giving loyal Red Cross blood donors an opportunity to donate blood.  Nationally, the American Red Cross issued an emergency need for blood donations, encouraging all eligible donors to make an appointment to donate blood.

LDL taking reservations for hula hoop fitness programs June 20

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- For those wanting to trim their waistlines or reduce stress, Loutit District Library is offering a hula hoop fitness program for all ages and levels with two sessions on Wednesday, June 20 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Hoop Fit is a new way to strengthen ones core muscles, add definition to arms and tighten legs.

Tools for Dealing with Grief and Loss at Spring Lake District Library

Spring Lake, MI --Grief resulting from a significant life change or loss of someone close to you can affect you in unexpected ways.  Feelings of depression, loneliness, and anxiety are common and can be overwhelming. Desiree Davis of Hospice of Michigan will be at the Spring Lake District Library on Thursday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. to share effective coping skills. Attendees will learn techniques to help process the feelings resulting from loss and how to support their emotional and physical health during difficult times. The public is invited to attend this free presentation.

Pickleball returns to Loutit District Library with two sessions

GRAND HAVEN, Mich --  Michigan Senior Olympics gold medalist Jimmy O’Hearn returns to bring Pickleball, one of the nation’s fastest growing sports for all ages, back for a second season to Loutit District Library (LDL) but with an added twist.

A large number of patron requests for an evening Pickleball session have prompted LDL officials to add another session to this season’s dates.

Session one will begin on Monday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and then a new session two will begin on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Both sessions are free and will be held in LDL’s Fourth Street parking lot.

Registration is not required and players are welcome at either one or both sessions. Pickleball will continue every Monday through August 27 and every Wednesday through August 29.

The Library’s Community Relations Coordinator Larry Halverson stated the added session came from community appeal.

Sign language program set for March 14 at Loutit District Library

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- American Sign Language is one of the fastest growing languages in the United States.

As a result, Loutit District Library will host Stephanie Kazanas, an instructor of American Sign Language Level 2 at Grand Rapids Community College, on Wednesday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. for an introduction to American Sign Language.

Program attendees will learn the alphabet, common everyday signs, and go away with the ability to sign basic sentences. Pamphlets will be given for practice at home.
