Lubbers Cup Regatta is Saturday

News Release:

SPRING LAKE, Mich. - Grand Valley State University's rowing club will host the 16th annual Lubbers Cup Regatta on Saturday, April 2, at the Spring Lake Yacht Club.

Top collegiate rowing teams from around the country and Canada are expected, including Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Brock University (Canada), Ohio State University, University of Virginia and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Events will begin at 8 a.m. and end with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.

The regatta is free and open to the public. Races can be viewed from the Spring Lake Yacht Club, 17500 W. Spring Lake Road. Parking is limited at this viewing location, a shuttle service will pick up viewers from the Emmanuel Free Church Parking Lot and Water Tower Park for a donation.

Seven Steps Up Event & Banquet Center in Spring Lake will celebrate its grand opening on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. The Chamber of Commerce and local Spring Lake Village officials will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:30pm, followed by an open house from 5pm to 8pm. The public is welcome to attend.

“We’re excited to finally host our grand opening after working out a few kinks over the last few months,” said co-owner, Michelle Hanks. “We delighted that our affiliated caterers will be joining us and serving up free samples of their food to the public.” 

The evening will feature five caterers from the area: Consider It Done/Desserts by Design, Porto Bello, and Anthony’s Kicked Up Catering from Grand Haven. From Muskegon, Ryke’s Catering and Bakery, and Hearthstone Restaurant will participate.

All-Day Kindergarten coming to St. Mary's

SPRING LAKE, Mich. - Saint Mary's Paris School will open the new academic year in fall 2011 by offering for the first time, an all-day, five-day-a-week kindergarten program for children five years of age.

The school is located at 421 east Exchange Street in Spring Lake.  Kindergarten registrations are now being taken for Fall 2011.

Anyone from the community, particularly newcomers to the Tri-Cities, who are interested in visiting the school or obtaining a kindergarten enrollment packet is invited to contact the school office at 842-1282.

Fun and Free Books at Spring Lake District Library

Spring Lake, MI--March is Reading Month, a time to emphasize the importance of reading early and often to children of all ages. Parents who bring their pre-school aged children to the OAISD’s Play ‘n Learn sessions at Spring Lake District Library on March 9 and March 16 will be treated to a free copy of The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss to add to their home library. Families with children age 0-5 may choose to attend either the 9:30 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. play groups on Wed., March 9.  An additional Play ‘n Learn designed for children age 0-24 months will take place on Wed., March 16 at 9:30 a.m.

A book give-away is also planned for Pre-school Storytime and Toddler Time the week of March 20. In addition to stories, music, crafts, and snacks, families will receive a free book to take home courtesy of the Thelma DeGraff Memorial Fund.

Cancer has Gone to the Dogs!

Grand Haven, MI – Must Love Dogs Boutique & Spa is hosting a Bark for Life Open House by the American Cancer Society on February 19th from 10am – 2pm.  Bark for Life is an event that honors the care-giving qualities of our canine companions while raising funds for the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society.  The Open House is an opportunity to get information and learn how YOU can be involved.  The actual Bark for Life event is similar to the Relay for Life events but you are allowed to include your dog(s) in the walk during Bark for Life.

After School Anime Movie at Spring Lake District Library

Spring Lake, MI--Anime lovers are invited to a screening of Castle in the Sky at Spring Lake District Library on Monday, Feb. 21 at 4:00 p.m.  This anime classic is a thrilling adventure fantasy written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and runs for 125 minutes. Youth are invited to attend and bring a friend to the free screening.
