My Town Grand Haven: Area state parks awarded life-saving beach kits

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.—Michigan Sea Grant and the National Weather Service are teaming up to help curb rip current drownings in the Great Lakes.

This summer, 10 public beaches along Lake Michigan are getting “beach safety kits”, including Grand Haven State Park, Muskegon State Park, Holland State Park, Hoffmaster State Park and Ludington State Park.  Each kit contains a life ring, a throw bag and U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for children and teenagers.

The program is also focused on raising awareness about the risk of rip currents, with “water watcher” cards urging parents to monitor children in the water and a searchable database of rip current incidents and deaths, which is available online.
