Some churches are having events on Good Friday (4/3) and some are not.  For further details and confirmations on any listing, you may want to call ahead.

My Town: St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish to offer Ash Wednesday masses Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish, located at 920 Fulton Street, will offer two Ash Wednesday masses with distribution of ashes on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to signal the beginning of the Lenten season. 

Fr. Phil Shangraw, priest and canonical administrator for the parish, will preside over both masses.  Anyone wishing to attend the masses is invited to come.

Ash Wednesday occurs 40 days before Good Friday.  In the Catholic church, on Ash Wednesday the faithful have their foreheads marked with ashes in the shape of a cross, as a symbol that the person belongs to Jesus Christ, who died on a cross.

Spring Lake District Library is offering a free PowerPoint Basics class on Wed., Feb. 25, at 7:00 p.m. PowerPoint software is used to create professional looking slide presentations that can include text, images, video and animation. Pre-registration is required as seating is limited. Register online at sllib.org.

 

A computer tutor is also available by appointment at the library. The tutor will work with individuals to upgrade their computer skills. If e-mail is still a mystery to you or if navigating the Internet is a frustrating experience, the computer tutor can help.

My Town: United Way hosts fourth annual Community Baby Shower

Greater Ottawa County United Way will host the 4th Annual LIVE UNITED Community Baby Shower during the week of February 9-14, 2015. Donations received from the public will benefit babies, young children and their families. When families receive baby essentials free of charge, they can use their resources for crucial needs such as food, transportation, and housing.

Five locations will accept donations during their business hours from February 9-14. In Grand Haven, donations can be dropped off at: Tri Cities Family YMCA, Anytime Fitness, and Loutit Library. In Holland, donations can be dropped off at Chico’s and DeNooyer Chevrolet. Donation suggestions include (ONLY NEW ITEMS CAN BE ACCEPTED): clothing, educational toys and books, car seats, high chairs, hygiene items, diapers and wipes. Perishables and used items cannot be accepted.

State Rep. Amanda Price will sponsor in-district office hours in Spring Lake on Friday, Feb. 6, to meet with local residents and discuss issues of interest or concern.

Price will be at the Spring Lake District Library, located at 123 E. Exchange St., from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Anyone is welcome to stop by as their schedules allow during that time, and appointments are not necessary.

My Town: Wild Blue Frozen Yogurt to host Lenten season fundraisers for parish

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.―Anyone wishing to feast before they fast in observance of the start of the Lenten season is encouraged to attend two fundraisers at Wild Blue Frozen Yogurt, at 1125 S. Beacon in Grand Haven to help benefit St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish.  Funds raised will support the parish’s capital stewardship campaign.

Wild Blue Frozen Yogurt will give back 15 percent of its sales to the parish on Monday, Feb. 16 and Fat Tuesday, Feb. 17 from these fundraisers, held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on both dates.  The general public is invited to attend.

Jim and Chris Wadaga, owners of Wild Blue Frozen Yogurt and parishioners at St. Patrick-St. Anthony  hosted one fundraising event in December and plan to host more throughout 2015 to support the parish’s capital campaign.

My Town: LDL’s Sunday Concert Series presents Damstra-Spring February 8

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Acoustic harmony favorites from the likes of  The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Mama Cass, Keith Urban, The Monkees, and more will be presented as Loutit District Library (LDL) Sunday Afternoon Concert Series continues on Feb. 8 with the energetic duo Damstra-Spring, “The Trace Duo.”

The concert will be held on LDL’s upper level lobby area from 2  p.m. to 3 p.m. LDL officials urge patrons to come early due to limited seating. LDL opens at 1 p.m. on Sundays.

"The Trace Duo" is Steve Damstra and Robin Spring, formerly of the bands “The Trace” and "Natchez Trace."  Damstra and Spring have been performing for decades.  They began playing together in 2006 when an acoustic reincarnation of Natchez Trace reformed.
