My Town Spring Lake: St. Mary’s School to celebrate mass With Bishop Walkowiak

SPRING LAKE, Mich.―A group of 190 St. Mary’s Parish students will be treated to a special school mass presided over by Bishop David Walkowiak, Friday, March 21 at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Spring Lake.

Walkowiak will celebrate the school mass, then visit St. Mary’s School classrooms and have lunch with the teaching and administrative staff.

“We are really looking forward to the bishop’s upcoming visit and we feel so very honored to have him celebrate this special school mass with the kids here on the lakeshore,” said Mike Devitt, St. Mary’s School principal.

Anyone interested in receiving further information about the event should contact Mike Devitt, principal of St. Mary’s School at (616) 842-1282.

Walkowiak is the 12th bishop of Grand Rapids, succeeding former Bishop Walter Hurley.  Walkowiak was installed in a special June 18, 2013 ordination mass in Grand Rapids at Cathedral Square.

Saint Mary’s Parish School is accredited by the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools. Saint Mary’s Parish School opened in 1954  at 406 East Savidge Street with 150 students enrolled in grades three through eight. In 1955, grades one and two were added. Enrollment increased every year up to 1965-66 when 330 students were enrolled. Since the mid-1970s, enrollment has remained steady around 200 students.

Saint Mary’s Catholic Church has served the community for 140 years. In April 2006, a 22,000 square foot Parish Center was completed and dedicated by Bishop Walter Hurley during a special ribbon cutting ceremony.

The mission of Saint Mary’s Parish reads: Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Catholic Christian Community of Saint Mary dedicate ourselves to living the Good News of Jesus Christ, primarily through worship, education, love and service to all.
