Traffic stop ends with driver's suicide

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) -- Grand Haven Public Safety officers say a traffic stop involving a stolen pickup ended with the driver killing himself.

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Grand Haven officers spotted a pickup truck reported stolen the day before in Grand Haven Township.  They began following the truck, which merged onto U.S. 31 northbound from Grand Haven.

The officers initiated a traffic stop of the truck when it reached the Pontaluna Road exit in Norton Shores.  According to police, they knew the driver might be armed, so they took positions for what they described as a "high-risk traffic stop" -- meaning there was a possibility of a confrontation.

While the truck was stopped, the driver -- a 22-year-old Ottawa County man -- shot himself in the head.  He was dead when officers checked him.

Ottawa County Sheriff's detectives tell our partner, the Grand Haven Tribune, that a 15-year-old Spring Lake Township runaway girl was a passenger in the truck.  She was recovered unharmed.

According to the Tribune, the girl was reported missing when her mother got home from work Monday evening.  Detectives say a handgun, rifle and jewelry were also taken from the girl's home.
