School Zone Partners With Kiwanis to Help Kids

GRAND HAVEN  — School Zone Publishing Company, an industry-leading publisher of early educational workbooks, flash cards, software and apps, has donated hundreds of titles for children at Saturday’s Winterfest Kids' Day.

The donation includes math, spelling and other skill-building flash cards and workbooks for children ages 3 to 12. Members of the Tri-Cities Kiwanis approached School Zone’s president and CEO, Jonathan Hoffman, last year about a community outreach partnership.

School Zone donated educational resources for a giveaway last summer at the Kiwanis-sponsored Kelly Miller Circus on Harbor Island in Grand Haven.

“We give without hesitation,” Hoffman said. “The Tri-Cities Kiwanis has a mission School Zone believes in deeply — helping children, especially those in need.”

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Meijer team members and their children will have a chance to receive up to $10,000 this year to further their college education with the Fred and Lena Meijer Scholarship, a competitive scholarship administered by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation.

“My brothers and I are proud to honor our parents with this new scholarship opportunity for Meijer team members and their children,” said Doug Meijer, co-chairman of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based supercenter retail chain.

The Fred and Lena Meijer Scholarship is a private scholarship fund that was established at the Grand Rapids Community Foundation in 1975 originally for children of Meijer team members that awarded $500 scholarships. In 2010, the scholarship program was expanded to include Meijer team members and increased to $1,000 awards. The Meijer family funded the scholarship in 2011 with a significant endowment gift to the Community Foundation.

Grand River Greenway Celebration series continues at Loutit District Library

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Senior Hydrogeologist from  Lakeshore Environmental, Inc., Kurt Koella,  kicks off the Grand River Greenway Parks Celebration nature discission series at the Loutit District Library on Thursday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Program Room A.

Koella’s program highlights the fact that the Grand River Greenway has been in the making for the past quarter century. He then describes a look toward future development.
Koella explains in detail that the Greenway was formed in a mere fraction of the geologic history of Michigan. His presentation accounts for the fact almost all of the features seen today were formed between 12,000 and 14,000 years before present. During this time the area was an unpredictable environment with huge floods, changing drainage patterns and bare tundra.

Koella program concludes with a period of questions and answers fro the audience..
