My Town: St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish to offer Ash Wednesday masses Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- St. Patrick-St. Anthony Parish, located at 920 Fulton Street, will offer two Ash Wednesday masses with distribution of ashes on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to signal the beginning of the Lenten season. 

Fr. Phil Shangraw, priest and canonical administrator for the parish, will preside over both masses.  Anyone wishing to attend the masses is invited to come.

Ash Wednesday occurs 40 days before Good Friday.  In the Catholic church, on Ash Wednesday the faithful have their foreheads marked with ashes in the shape of a cross, as a symbol that the person belongs to Jesus Christ, who died on a cross.

The Meijer Simply Give program – held three times a year – generated nearly $6 million in 2014 for food pantries throughout the Midwest, bringing the program’s overall donation total to nearly $14 million since it began in November 2008.

The retailer’s most recent campaign, which ended in January, was the most successful holiday campaign in the program’s history, resulting in a total of more than $1.8 million for hungry families.

Greater Ottawa County United Way will host the 4th Annual LIVE UNITED Community Baby Shower during the week of February 9-14, 2015. Donations received from the public will benefit babies, young children and their families. When families receive baby essentials free of charge, they can use their resources for crucial needs such as food, transportation, and housing.

Five locations will accept donations during their business hours from February 9-14. In Grand Haven, donations can be dropped off at: Tri Cities Family YMCA, Anytime Fitness, and Loutit Library. In Holland, donations can be dropped off at Chico’s and DeNooyer Chevrolet. Donation suggestions include (ONLY NEW ITEMS CAN BE ACCEPTED): clothing, educational toys and books, car seats, high chairs, hygiene items, diapers and wipes. Perishables and used items cannot be accepted.

The Dental Careers program at Careerline Tech Center started the 2015 school year with state-of-the-art dental chairs allowing students to gain hands-on experience with technology used in today’s dental offices.

“These chairs allow our students to gain experience on the high-tech equipment found in the current work environment and gives our students an advantage when applying for jobs after high school,” said Denise Callaghan, dental careers instructor for CTC. “Receiving these chairs as a donation from Dr. Darren Riopelle at Little Smiles provides our students with real-world experience and helps set the stage for a successful career.”

My Town: LDL’s Sunday Concert Series presents Damstra-Spring February 8

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Acoustic harmony favorites from the likes of  The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Mama Cass, Keith Urban, The Monkees, and more will be presented as Loutit District Library (LDL) Sunday Afternoon Concert Series continues on Feb. 8 with the energetic duo Damstra-Spring, “The Trace Duo.”

The concert will be held on LDL’s upper level lobby area from 2  p.m. to 3 p.m. LDL officials urge patrons to come early due to limited seating. LDL opens at 1 p.m. on Sundays.

"The Trace Duo" is Steve Damstra and Robin Spring, formerly of the bands “The Trace” and "Natchez Trace."  Damstra and Spring have been performing for decades.  They began playing together in 2006 when an acoustic reincarnation of Natchez Trace reformed.

HOLLAND, Mich.-- Elzinga & Volkers (E&V), a leading provider of construction management services, will celebrate its 70th anniversary by launching a 70 Random Acts of Kindness initiative throughout West Michigan.  

The year-long program will see all employees continuing to give back to the communities that have supported E&V’s growth over the past seven decades.  Team members will venture out into the community with the financial resources to make a difference wherever they feel drawn to help. My Town: SCORE and LDL offers free social marketing workshop Jan. 27

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Changes in marketing have left many small businesses wondering what they need to do. Consumers have made a monumental shift on where they are getting information- online research is on the rise. Small businesses have started to emulate what others are doing without thinking through what is the best for them.

This workshop, presented by Laura Holmes, of FineLine Creative Inc. and LaShelle Mikesell, encourages each business to listen to and observe their customers.
