SPRING LAKE, Mich. – The faculty, staff and students at Saint Mary’s School are finalizing plans for the sixth annual “Race for Education,” which will be held Friday, May 10, from 12:30 p.m. to  2:30 p.m. at the school.

Staff members will join preschool through eighth grade students to walk or run around a designated area as many times as they are able to in one hour’s time.  The students will also have an opportunity to compete for a number of prizes and awards during the event.. The general public is invited to attend at no cost.

Proceeds from the Race for Education will help offset the cost of a Catholic education by keeping tuition affordable for students. The 2012 event raised $33,600.

In March, each student involved in the event received a label sheet which they turned in with names of people who could become potential event sponsors in an effort to help the school raise money for Catholic education. Race coordinator Ann Pendery then sent out letters to individuals referenced on the label sheets, asking them to sponsor the child in this year’s race. Potential sponsors include family members of students, relatives, close friends, neighbors, family doctors, dentists and piano teachers.

Students also benefit from the event by exercising, working on a group fundraising project and receiving prizes.  Past year’s prize lists included gift cards, movie passes, stuffed animals, beach and water toys, fun games, sidewalk chalk and more.

Saint Mary’s School is located at 421 east Exchange Street in Spring Lake. Anyone interested in attending or those who have questions about the event should contact Pendery at (616) 842-1282 for further information.
