Saint Mary's School in Spring Lake Raises Over $31,000 in Annual Race for Education

SPRING LAKE, Mich., June 7, 2011 - More than $31,000 was raised in the fourth annual "Race for Education," sponsored by Saint Mary's Parish School.  The school is located at 421 east Exchange Street in Spring Lake.

All fundraising was the responsibility of the students in kindergarten through eighth grades at the school.  The one-hour walk took place May 13 and consisted of students each obtaining pledges for cash to help defray the cost of Catholic education in the area. "We had great weather, a lot of volunteer involvement, a few 'cooling off stations' and many, many prizes. The kids did a great job staying active for the one-hour walk," said Pam Mettler, school board member. Parents, grandparents, friends and relatives, plus supporters from all around the community were invited to attend and cheer the students on in their walk.  No admission was charged and the event was open to the public.  At the conclusion of the race, all students were treated to ice cream. Each student enrolled from kindergarten through eighth grade at Saint Mary’s Parish School raised funds by gathering mailing labels with potential sponsors’ names on them, asking community members to be their “sponsors,” and having sponsors contribute a tax-deductible donation to Saint Mary’s School.  The two students who brought in the most labels with potential sponsor names won a one-day pass to Michigan Adventure.   Students who brought in 30 or more labels of potential sponsor names were entered into a drawing to win prizes such as stuffed animals, gift cards, beach and yard toys, and so on. Anyone interested in obtaining enrollment information for Saint Mary's Parish School should contact the office at:  616/842-1282.
