First Reformed Church Selects Faith in Action International To Help With Feeding Program

GRAND HAVEN, Mich., July 2, 2011 – The plight of the world’s poorest has been increasingly on the heart of First Reformed Church.

Many of the teachings in the past year have focused on God’s clear and uncompromising call for His Church to come to the aid of those in need.  Members of First Reformed Church also recently read the book, The Hole In Our Gospel as a congregation which deeply impacted many about how they could make a difference in the world.

The church responded with a special challenge to work for free for one day and give that days’ wages toward building two schools in Africa through Samaritan’s Purse.  The whole church responded and enough money was given to build the schools as well as a church in Bolivia.  Now they are tackling the hunger crisis in Haiti.

“To increase our compassion ministry, we wanted to partner with a well-established organization that reaches out to feed people in third-world countries in the most compassionate way and that is the reason that Faith in Action International (FIAI) has been selected,” said Stan Houck, First Reformed Church mission team member.

Faith in Action International is a Christian mission based in Verrettes, Haiti, under the direction of Tom Braak of Spring Lake, who serves as founder and missionary.  The FIAI mission was founded in 1997 to reveal God’s love to the people of Haiti by facilitating sustainable rural communities.  More than 60,000 Haitian villagers living in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti have been directly or indirectly impacted by FIAI’s ministries since its founding.

The 10,000 meals (a six-month supply of food packets) that First Reformed wants to purchase will be provided by “Kids Against Hunger” and distributed to the poor, handicapped, blind and marginalized villagers in Verrettes and Veilot, Haiti by Tom Braak’s ministry, FIAI.

These packets include rice, beans, dried vegetables and multiple vitamins.

“We will look for other local churches to partner with us to help provide an additional 10,000 meals,” said Houck, “Plus, in the future, we would like to have a volunteer team from First Reformed travel to Haiti to help Tom Braak and the FIAI mission staff distribute some of the food.”

Worship on the Waterfront (W.O.W.), a summer ministry of First Reformed Church, will be highlighting this feeding project at its Sunday evening events so the community can be made aware of this project.  The mission team is also planning several fundraisers later this summer and fall, including a dinner with a silent auction, a craft show, burrito sales and a golf tournament to raise the funds needed to meet the $3,300 goal.
