My Town Grand Haven: Grand Pizza & Beer Fest champs crowned | Business
GRAND HAVEN, Mich.—The Chamber of Commerce for Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg has crowned a new set of champions in the Grand Pizza & Beer Fest.
On Saturday, March 22, more than 400 people sampled the creations of six local pizzerias. They then voted for the best classic and best specialty pizza. Clover Bar took the title for classic pizza with their cheese pizza; Old Boys’ Brewhouse was runner-up. In the specialty pizza category, Old Boys’ Brewhouse took the most votes; Clover Bar was a close second. Mr. Scrib’s won the Best Booth Award.
As part of the festival, participants also sampled craft beer from six local breweries- Acoustic Mead, New Holland Brewery, Odd Side Ales, Osgood Brewing, Unruly Brewing Co. and Vander Mill. Lemon Creek Winery also offered up its local wine to pair with pizza. Eight community members also competed in a pizza eating contest sponsored by Pizza Hut and Redi Rental. Mike Modell was the first to finish off a medium pizza, in 5 minutes and 21 seconds.
“The pizza went down easy…the crust you had to drink water to help it go down. I didn’t figure that out until half way through,” he explained.
Mike walked away with a fully belly, Dune Dollars and a 2014 Pizza Pie Eating Contest medal.
Event Director Courtney Geurink says this year's Grand Pizza & Beer Fest was bigger than years past, with more breweries participating and a homebrew seminar presented by Steve Siciliano of Siciliano’s Market in Grand Rapids.
“Our goal for 2015 is to have a homebrew competition added to the event and what better way to start that off in 2014 but with a seminar on how to homebrew, ” says Geurink.
Next year’s Grand Pizza & Beer Fest will take place Saturday, March 21.
