Loutit District Library commemorates wedding anniversary of John and Abigail Adams with stage play

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- October 25 marks the 250th wedding anniversary of Founding Father and architect to the Constitution John Adams and his wife Abigail.

To commemorate this anniversary, the Loutit District Library with Gem Theatrics, Wednesday, Oct. 15, present an inside look at their unique relationship with the stage production by Grand Rapids playwright Mary G. Kron titled “My Dearest Friend.”

The performance begins at 7 p.m. in the Grand Haven Community Center’s theatre, 421 Columbus Avenue. Admission is free, however, reservations are required.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Ragtime, Blues and Boogie-Woogie pianist Matthew Ball will present an exciting and fun American Roots program on Sunday, Oct. 12 for all ages on as part of Loutit District Library’s year-long centennial celebration and concert series.

Ball’s concert includes arrangements of classic American songs like Swanee River, Over the Rainbow, The Entertainer, Sheik of Araby, Bumble Boogie, Cow Cow Blues, and many more.

This free concert will be held in LDL’s upper level lobby from 2-3p.m.

Our Town: LDL presents history of silent movie star Buster Keaton

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. --  Loutit District Library will host local historian Ron Pesch as he presents the story of Buster Keaton's days along the Lake Michigan shore at an actor’s colony founded by his father.

Pesch’s program titled “Buster Keaton: What I did on My Summer Vacation” will focus on Keaton’s first visit to the city of Muskegon in 1902 and his life as a star in silent films. Keaton called a section of the city known as Bluffton home until he became a movie star.

This free presentation will be given on Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 7-8:30 p.m. in Program Room A.

The Kick-off of the Grand Haven ArtWalk 2014, celebrates with a Picnic & Painting at the redesigned Centertown area on Wednesday, September 24 at noon. Meet in the parking lot near the Frame & Mat Shop located at 728 Washington Street in Grand Haven.

Holiday Inn of Grand Haven/Spring Lake will provide lunch and the community has the opportunity to express their artistic talent through the Community Art Project “Sunday on the Grand”.

The community is invited to experience this ArtWalk of creativity through October 12.

My Town: Movie screening of “Fresh” set for September 24 in Grand Haven

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.-- Local First will present the film “Fresh” on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Loutit District Library.

This film, by Sofia Joanes, celebrates the farmers, thinkers, and business people across America who re-invent our food system. The film looks at the industrialization of agriculture and the consequences that include environmental pollution and rising obesity rates.

Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, rooted in the concept of a strong local food system, "Fresh" offers a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

This free program will be shown in LDL’s Program Room A beginning at 7 p.m.

Fall Harvest Ballroom Dance

The Commons of Evergreen present the Fall Harvest Ballroom Dance with music by Pacific Lite on Saturday, October 11th from 7 - 10pm.  Admission is $10 for a Commons member and $15 for Non-members.

Everyone is asked to bring an appetizer or snack to share.

Reservations and payment must be made by Thursday, October 9th.

My Town: Pastors transition to new parishes Sept. 17

COOPERSVILLE, Mich.—A pastor from Coopersville and Marne is presiding over a new parish.

Effective Sept. 17,  Rev. David C. Gross of St. Mary Parish in Marne and St. Michael Parish in Coopersville will take over as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Spring Lake. 

Bishop Walkowiak with the Diocese of Grand Rapids has appointed Rev. D. Anton Tran to take over Gross’ duties at the parishes in Marne and Coopersville, beginning that same day.  Tran is leaving St. Mary-St. Jerome Parish in Custer.
