Hanging Out In Grand Haven

Hanging Out In Grand Haven

Written by Steven G. de Polo

Grand Haven has been defined by its lighthouse for more than 170 years. The current bright red lighthouse and pierhead are charming in the summer, but they speak to the merciless fury of Lake Michigan that has consumed grizzled mariners and foolhardy frat boys alike. Respect the riptides, my pets.

And The Band Marches On!

And The Band Marches On!

Spring Lake Band Camp came to a close Friday at Grand Valley State University in Allendale. High Humidity and stormy weather did not damper their attitudes as the students prepared and practiced this year's marching show daily from dawn 'til dusk. Friday showed their accomplishments at the 5 day camp as they performed for their parents and families. After this the band will practice every Monday evening until football season is under way. The Spring Lake marching band will perform this Saturday in Coast Guard Parade in downtown Grand Haven.

JULY 26, 2011, GRAND HAVEN, Mich., - The coal sculptures and wooden pull toys that will be featured at the upcoming "Red Bird Mission Arts and Crafts Fair" at United Methodist Church of the Dunes, at 717 Sheldon Road in Grand Haven, on August 13 and 14 reflect artistry from a group of craftspersons numbering 200 strong.  Most of the craftspersons are between the ages of 40 and 75 years, who have honed their crafts learned from parents and grandparents going back some 90 years.  All artisans are from the Appalachian region nestled in the Kentucky foothills and mountains.

"The coal comes from the Kentucky mountains.  The coal companies we work with check the coal and we develop a resin mixed with coal dust which is poured into a mold to fabricate the coal figurines offered through the Red Bird Mission," said Rose Fee, manager of the Red Bird Mission Craft Shop.
