Meijer generates nearly $6 Million for Midwest food pantries in 2014

The Meijer Simply Give program – held three times a year – generated nearly $6 million in 2014 for food pantries throughout the Midwest, bringing the program’s overall donation total to nearly $14 million since it began in November 2008.

The retailer’s most recent campaign, which ended in January, was the most successful holiday campaign in the program’s history, resulting in a total of more than $1.8 million for hungry families.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Acoustic harmony favorites from the likes of  The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Mama Cass, Keith Urban, The Monkees, and more will be presented as Loutit District Library (LDL) Sunday Afternoon Concert Series continues on Feb. 8 with the energetic duo Damstra-Spring, “The Trace Duo.”

The concert will be held on LDL’s upper level lobby area from 2  p.m. to 3 p.m. LDL officials urge patrons to come early due to limited seating. LDL opens at 1 p.m. on Sundays.

"The Trace Duo" is Steve Damstra and Robin Spring, formerly of the bands “The Trace” and "Natchez Trace."  Damstra and Spring have been performing for decades.  They began playing together in 2006 when an acoustic reincarnation of Natchez Trace reformed.

This Friday, Jan. 16 from 5 p.m. to10 p.m., you're invited to walk the snow-free heated sidewalks in downtown Grand Haven to experience your favorite Michigan vintage. Wine artists will be recognized in an award reception following the tasting event.

My Town Grand Haven: LDL hosts collection of rare photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jan. 21

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – When the civil rights movement moved to Chicago in the mid-1960s, a priest named Bernard Kleina felt compelled to get involved. The Chicago Freedom Movement, led in part by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., protested the unfair housing policies.

Kleina, who was 30 years old at the time, decided to remove his collar, pick up his camera, and march. The photographs he took during that are now part collections of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Those photographs, titled “The Healing Power of Hope; The Chicago Freedom Movement, Then & Now,” will be on exhibit at Loutit District Library on Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. in LDL’s upper level lobby.

LANSING, Mich. – Making fruits and vegetables more readily available, cancer screenings by mail, health coaches and exercise programs are just several of the local initiatives getting funding from the Michigan Department of Community Health.

The MDCH recently announced 44 projects are getting approximately $1.34 million, including a dozen projects in West Michigan.  The grants include:

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Loutit District Library's Sunday Afternoon Concert Series continues on Jan. 11 as Grand Haven Area High School's fiddle group, GOTAK, presents an afternoon of foot-stomping traditional Celtic music.

GOTAK is an after-school alternative string ensemble founded in 2005 by high school orchestra director Melissa Meyers. Under her leadership, GOTAK has grown to more than 20 members and has had the privilege of working with alternative string directors such as Bob Phillips and Tim Staudacher. The group has also performed with traditional Celtic bands Kennedy’s Kitchen and Uneven Ground.

The concert is free and begins at 2 p.m. on the library’s upper level lobby. Library officials urged the public to come early due to limited seating. LDL opens at 1p.m. on Sundays.
