My Town Grand Haven: 'Weird Animals' Vacation Bible School begins June 23

GRAND HAVEN, Mich.St. Patrick/St. Anthony Parish is inviting area children in kindergarten through fifth grade to participate in Vacation Bible School, from June 23 to June 26.

VBS will take place each day from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Parish Family Center, 920 Fulton Street in Grand Haven. Program cost is $10 per child to attend and the registration deadline is 12 p.m. on June 20. The theme for this year’s VBS is “Weird Animals:  Where Jesus’ Love is One-of-a-Kind."

“By weird, we mean unique, wonderful and one-of-a-kind, in the sense that kids can experience the extraordinary love of Jesus,” said Rebecca Chicklon, children’s ministry director with St. Patrick/St. Anthony Parish.

Meet Michigan Notable Book author, former crime reporter, tournament pool player, soccer mom, and Detroit Lions fan Mardi Jo Link at Spring Lake District Library. Link will be talking about her memoir Bootstrapper: From Broke to Badass on a Northern Michigan Farm, on Tuesday, June 17, at 7:00 p.m. Bootstrapper was chosen as one of this year’s Michigan Notable Books. A book signing will follow the presentation.

 

Bootstrapper is the story of how Link’s sense of humor and determination helped her overcome her financial struggles when her marriage of 19 years ends. By acquiring new skills like chicken wrangling and hog butchering, and with the help of her three sons, Link manages to avoid impending foreclosure. Link’s struggles to overcoming hardship and adversity leave her a stronger woman, and her readers with the satisfaction of knowing that hard work pays off.

Grand Haven Art Festival is Almost Here

The 53rd Grand Haven Art Festival is right around the corner! World class art will fill the first three blocks of Washington Avenue on June 28 and 29 with local artists and artists from all over the country.

Coordinated by The Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, the Grand Haven Art Festival will provide locals and visitors with the perfect opportunity to pick up a unique decorative piece for their home or office. Artwork will include pottery, jewelry, painting, glassworks, photography and much more.

Picture yourself lingering over a delicious meal with family or friends discussing your favorite books and authors. Summer is the perfect time to relax with a good book and enjoy great local food. Adults who sign up for the Taste of Summer Reading Club at Spring Lake District Library will have the opportunity to do both. The reading club begins on Monday, June 9. Book club participants may earn a prize for every five books they read. (Limit three prizes per participant, while supplies last.) Books need to be checked out from Spring Lake District Library.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Summer reading is not just for kids!

Starting June 2, adults can pick up a bingo card, read nine books or eBooks, and/or listen to unabridged audiobooks checked out from Loutit District Library and have their reading verified at the checkout desk. Books over 500 pages or audiobooks over 10 CDs count as two books.

When their bingo card is full, readers will receive a fold away sling tote, courtesy of the Friends of LDL. Five lucky readers will also win an eReader, a $15 gift certificate from Chocolates by Grimaldi, a gift basket from Culvers or one of two other great prizes. Everyone who finishes will receive a fold-up shopping bag and a coupon from Culvers.

The Spring Lake Heritage Festival is the perfect time to celebrate the contributions of renowned artist and pioneer in the field of animation, Winsor McCay. Spring Lake District Library will be hosting two McCay-themed programs for boys and girls on Tuesday, June 10, during Heritage Festival week.

My Town: Loutit District Library announces Memorial Day hours

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- Loutit District Library will be be open during normal hours on Saturday, May 24.

Saturday hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The library will be closed Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.

Although the library is closed, its website, www.loutitlibrary.org, is available 24 hours a day. Patrons can check on the availability of books and other resources at any of the libraries in the Lakeland Library Cooperative online. They can renew materials, place holds and review the status of their library accounts. In addition, the website provides online databases, a calendar of upcoming library events and links to other resources to help patrons find the information they need.
