Fire Barn Gallery announces show featuring paintings by ArtPrize top 10 finalist Richard App

(GRAND HAVEN, MI) - The Fire Barn Gallery is announcing its second show since being hosted by Grand Haven Artwalk and the Grand Haven Main Street DDA.  The two organizations have collaborated to renovate the gallery space, and to secure a lineup of shows that extends through the fall and winter, and beyond.

The newest show, which opens November 17, features Grand Rapids artist and gallery owner, Richard App.  His career in the Grand Rapids art scene began in the early 1990s after receiving his MFA in photography from Northern University of Flagstaff.  He attended Kendall, where he earned a BFA in fine art, and then began a successful photography studio at 910 Cherry Street.

In 2006, he changed directions, deciding to turn the studio into an art gallery dedicated to showing primarily West Michigan artists.  Since then, The Richard App Gallery has shown a wide variety of artists, and his collection includes several of his own paintings.  He describes himself as being drawn to color and movement, both in his own work as well as in the work he represents in his gallery.

In 2009 he became a Grand Rapids ArtPrize top 10 finalist with the piece "Nessie on the Grand",  a collaboration between himself and 3 other artists, which now is on permanent display at the John Ball Zoo.

The show at the Fire Barn Gallery is an opportunity for the West Michigan community to see works that Mr. App rarely shows in public.  This solo exhibition, curated by Chris Protas,  will feature about 20 of Mr. Apps' paintings, spanning 2 decades of work.  The opening reception is on Thursday, November 17, from 6 to 9pm, and will include a gallery talk by the artist.

The show will be up through December 5, with gallery hours every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, from noon to 6 pm., and by appointment.  More information is available on facebook at "The Fire Barn Gallery," and by email inquiry to firebarngallery@gmail.com.
