Community garden to open in Ferrysburg

FERRYSBURG, Mich.—Ferrysburg is getting its own community garden.

During their Monday night meeting, city council members hammered out details about the planned green space.  City Manager Craig Bessinger says the garden will be 60 feet by 100 feet and located on the east side of City Hall.  The community garden will be fenced in and contain 42 to 60 plots, including some handicap-accessible raised beds.

The community garden will be open to Ferrysburg residents only.  The space will be free and water will be provided by the city, but participating greenthumbs must bring their own plants and tools.

Plots are available on a first come, first served basis.  Interested gardeners should contact City Hall at (616) 842-5803 to be added to the list.

Bessinger says the City will wait and see how many applications come in before moving forward with construction.  The project is expected to cost approximately $5,000, which will be covered by the city’s general fund.  If all goes well, the City hopes to start construction before November 2013 so the garden is ready by spring 2014.
