Big waves churn up Lake Michigan

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM)- Whipping winds, cool temperatures and really big waves - it is not what people spending the holiday on the lakeshore this weekend expected to experience.  But that's what they found along the beach in Grand Haven Friday night.  Braving the wind was challenging and the waves were unbelievable.

Camper Kristi Mercer said, "This is just unreal I've been coming to Grand Haven since I could barely walk and I've never seen the waves like this..never!"

Those camping in tents had a rough time keeping everything tied down and stable.  The waves washed over the piers, creating great photo opportunities.

And then there are those who went out in the huge swells.  Boogie boarder Scott Cogswell said, "You gotta know what you're doin.. uh.. there's a lot of people out there and they say oh that's dangerous or.. you shouldn't do that and so I've been doin it for a few years and I thought I'd try it."

There is a red flag warning reminder swimmers it is best to stay out of the water.  The high winds are expected to subside by Sunday.
