Grand Haven lights up newly renovated downtown

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM)-The weather was relatively calm Saturday for Grand Haven's Jingle Bell parade.

The procession ended at Central Park, where city leaders lit the community Christmas tree. The Salvation Army also led carols with the help of Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Community members who also attended Saturday night's parade and tree lighting also celebrated the end of construction downtown.

"We're very excited. All of the decorations downtown are beautiful. You know, we've gone through some extensive renovations in our downtown area and all the lights are up and running," says Pamela Blake, who is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Ken Formsma was the grand marshal for this year's parade. He also led fundraising for building the Grand Haven boardwalk and its recent renovation.

Spring Lake neighborhood light show goes on despite one neighbor's attempt to shut it down

SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WZZM) - A Spring Lake homeowner wants to shut down his neighborhood's popular Christmas lights display, but the organizer of the event isn't backing down.

Brad Boyink started the "Holiday Road" Christmas synchronized light show five years ago. As the event gained in popularity, he managed to convince every house on Heather Court in Sprink Lake to take part. An estimated 70,000 people visit the display each year, but one homeowner on Heather Court wants to take Brad Boyink - to court.

"They feel the show is a nuisance," says Boyink, speaking about the lone house which decided not to participate this year.

Boyink adds that the lone neighbor has a list of reasons for not participating.

"It creates congestion in the neighborhood; it doesn't belong here; it's an inconvenience to them [the non-participating neighbor]; and they just don't want to see it here," says Boyink.

UPDATE: Tree cutting angers Spring Lake Township officials

SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM)- Spring Lake Township leaders are learning more about the unauthorized removal of 10 pine trees from a park.

The 12 to 15-feet tall trees were left nearly stacked in the park some time last week.

Thursday night the Township Manager met with neighbors who live near the trees.  He says he has a better understanding of why the trees were cut down.

In the past, residents  have complained about the trees blocking views of the Grand River.  Still, no one is taking responsibility.

'Fill the Boat' effort collects Toys for Tots donations in Grand Haven

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM)- Volunteers with the Lakeshore chapter of Toys For Tots hope teamwork helps bring in toy donations this weekend.

The annual toy donation event is once again teaming up with members of Coast Guard Group Grand Haven.  Friday members of the two groups collected toy donations near U.S. 31 and Jackson Street on the city's North end.  Members of the Coast Guard brought with them a 25-foot rescue boat.

Friday and Saturday community members are encouraged to drop by and help stuff the rescue boat with unwrapped toys.  On Friday the group will be outside the Starbucks Coffee until 7 p.m..  On Saturday toys can be brought to the same location from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Last year a similar effort brought in more than 600 toys for Toys For Tots.  Bill Peak with the agency says the request for help from Lakeshore families has increased this year.

Griffin School receives ExxonMobil grant

Griffin School receives ExxonMobil grant

Griffin Elementary School received a $750 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program to support health and fitness goals at Griffin Elementary School including their on-going Mileage Club.

The West Olive EZ Mart worked with school officials to secure the grant, which is one of 2,400 available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations.

The ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. ExxonMobil believes that, as members of the community, local retailers are best qualified to work with local educators to help identify schools and programs most in need of support.
