Spring Lake native in D2 championship game

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- For the second time in three years, the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth are in the Division 2 national championship football game.  And a West Michigan product hopes to close his college career by earning another ring.

Robbie Aurich is a senior linebacker for UMD.  He was not heavily recruited coming out of Spring Lake High School but has had an outstanding career for the Bulldog program earning All-American honors as a junior and becoming one of the premiere defensive players in Division 2.  Overlooked by most schools, Aurich is grateful UMD gave him his chance.  "I don't think we got a lot of recruiters coming down (to Spring Lake).  I'm thankful for an opportunity to play.  And Minnesota-Duluth gave me an opportunity to play and I think I've made the most of it."

Industrial fire in Grand Haven

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) - No one was injured following an industrial fire Tuesday morning in Grand Haven Township. The fire started around 5:30 a.m. at Assembly Source One, located in the 17000 block of Hayes Street.

Investigators believe the fire started in a pallet of cardboard, then spread to the attic. Firefighter were able to gain control of the flames in a matter of minutes, But they called for backup from Spring Lake and Ferrysburg, because the cold initially hampered their efforts.

Grand Haven Fire Chief, Tom Gerencer says two fire hydrants froze up, but they were able to find others that were still flowing.

The building houses three different manufacturing businesses. Firefighters were not sure which business sustained the damage.

Snow-kite demonstration comes to the lakeshore

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) - With more snow set to fall on West Michigan, several winter enthusiests attened a snow-kiting demonstration Saturday in Grand Haven.

The event was put on by "MACKite" which is a locally-owned kiteboarding retailer.

Organizers say snow kiting is very similar to kiteboarding and uses all the same gear, with the exception of a snowboard and warmer outerwear, and that the sport is actually easier because it takes less power to propel the rider.

Aaron Johnson, a local rider, says snow kiting is growing in popularity.

"It's a good cross-over sport for people who are looking for something to do in the winter time," says Johnson.

If you're interested in learning more about the sport of snow kiting, or when the next demonstration will be, click HERE and you will be taken directly to the MACkite website.

Grand Haven officials don't plow snow, they melt it

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) - It's hard to imagine streets without snow this time of year, but it's a reality for parts of Grand Haven right now.

After months of construction Grand Haven's downtown business owners got an added bonus-- a program that promises to keep snow off of streets.

During upgrades of the downtown district's infrastructure the city spent an extra $2 million to put in a snow melt system. The price tag of the whole project is $6 million.

The system runs hot water through pipes under the pavement, making it warm enough to melt the snow.

Dana Kollowehr, Director of the Downtown Development Authority says it's also good for the environment because it prevents salt from running into the Grand River.
