Loutit District Library to offer pastel workshop January 22

GRAND HAVEN -- Registration is now open for A Pastel Experience, a workshop instructed by local artist Patricia Dee on Saturday, January 22 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Loutit District Library.

The course provides information and instruction as well as the handling and application. Students will learn about the origins of pastels and the different types available, as well as show various applications styles. 

Students will have the opportunity to paint on more than one type of paper and experience the difference between painting on white and tinted papers.

Course topics include: Types of Pastels, Material cautions, handling, Supports – paper, sanded – rigid, Painting with Pastels – applications/strokes – under-painting, Tools – brush, spray, peanuts, gloves, tape, ruler, and Matting/Framing.

At day’s end, everyone will leave with a painting. There is $10.00 material fee due at the time of registration. Class is limited to 16 students.

Dr. Barber is a life-long Michigan resident, who has spent most of her career in the middle part of the state.

This program teaches how to perform CPR in adults, children, or infants and how to help an adult, child, or infant who is choking. It is perfect for Family members, friends and members of the general  community who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card. Anyone required by his or her employer or wishing to be credentialed as a lay responder may contact Spring Lake Fire Department  for more information.

Spring Lake woman discourages distracted driving

SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WZZM)- A Spring Lake woman who lost her son in a distracted driving accident is now part of a national campaign encouraging people to Hang Up and Drive.

On January 19, 2004 Joseph Teater, 12, and his mother were on East Beltline near Knapp when their SUV was hit by a hummer that ran a red light.  Police said the driver of the hummer was on her cell phone.

Joseph died from his injuries the next day.  His mom, Judy, is one of the founders of Focus Driven.  It is a national organizations devoted to raising awareness of distracted driving.  She also appears in Federal Department of Transportation videos called Faces of Distraction.

"Parents don't understand when they hand their kids a cellphone, they're handing them a lethal weapon," said Teason.

Ottawa County home invasion suspects arrested

OTTAWA COUNTY, Michigan (WZZM) - Two men are in custody for a home invastion on Sunday, December 19.

A 27-year-old man from  Grand Haven and a 31-year-old man from Robinson Township are suspected of breaking into a Grand Haven Township home and taking items out of a safe.

An off-duty Ottawa County Sheriff's deputy spotted the suspects on Monday, December 20. When on-duty Sheriff's deputies tried to arrest the men near an Allendale Township business, they ran. Both were arrested a short-time later in the Bass River Recreational Area.

The suspects names will be released at their arraignment. They are currently lodged at the Ottawa County Jail and will be charged with Home Invasion, 1st degree, Safe Breaking, being Habitual Offenders, and were on parole on drug and property crimes.

Ottawa County, Mich. (WZZM) A viewer driving on US 31 near Filmore Street contacted the WZZM 13 Information Center Monday afternoon after coming upon a car fire. An 18 year old high school senior pulled over to the side of the road after his Volkswagen began smoking.  He exited the vehicle and watched as his car went up in flames. No one was hurt.  The pictures were provided to us by Jason LaVelle of Absolute Photography in Holland. Lavelle was driving by and stopped to help.

GRAND HAVEN -- Toy Story III will be the feature movie for kids and their family at Loutit District Library’s holiday matinee on Wednesday, December 29 in the Youth Program Room from 2:00 to 3:45 p.m.
